Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty is a surgery to reshape the external female genitalia that allows the labia minora to return to its natural size and appearance with normal proportions.

Labiaplasty can be a life-changing surgery if the appearance of your labia makes you uncomfortable or unhappy. In addition to making the tissue appear smaller and more contoured, labiaplasty can relieve pain and irritation when performing certain activities. Suppose you are curious about whether you are a candidate for this procedure. In that case, there is no time like the present to schedule a private consultation with Dr. Joan Alvarez.

Why is it performed?

This operation of the genital lips corrects morphological alterations, imbalances in size between one lip and the other, or appearance of the area without altering its functionality by applying different techniques appropriate to each patient and the type of malformation suffered.

When the labia minora are excessively large, they present an irregular and peculiar shape. It is then that they are reduced and corrected. On the other hand, labiaplasty can also increase and reshape the labia majora by applying hyaluronic acid injections or fatty tissue fillers.

Who is a good candidate for labiaplasty surgery?

  • Over time, one or both labia lips may become asymmetrical, loose, or enlarged. As a result, women may feel self-conscious or embarrassed.
Lip size and shape are unique to each person, and there is a wide range of what is considered normal. However, this is not just an aesthetic problem when lips are significantly elongated. The tissue can cause pain or discomfort, interfering with your daily routines.
  • Feeling that the vaginal lips or vulva are marked with specific garments, such as swimsuits, tight pants, sportswear, etc.
  • Noticing pain, irritation, or discomfort when walking or running due to the friction of the labia or when having sexual intercourse.
  • Having loss of sensitivity in the clitoris after pregnancy or childbirth.
  • Having persistent infections and difficulties in keeping the area clean due to the size of the clitoral foreskin, which is excessive and favors the accumulation of bacteria and dirt (menstrual blood, discharge…) between the folds.

What can be expected from labiaplasty surgery?

It is a minor surgery since it is an outpatient process where only local anesthesia is applied. The procedure lasts between 30 and 60 minutes, and, after a bit of practice, the patient goes home.
A labiaplasty consists of an incision in the genital area, thus eliminating the mucosa and substances that make up the excess volume and skin. Then, the specialist closes this incision, returning the lips of the vulva to the appropriate dimensions.

Is sensitivity lost in a Labiaplasty?

The sensitivity is not affected; Since unnecessary tissue was removed, many women report increased sensation after labiaplasty.

Care after the operation

The recovery time after the intervention depends on how the surgical process develops. As it is an outpatient operation, the patient goes home after surgery and does not need to stay in the hospital. However, in some exceptional cases, it may be necessary to remain hospitalized for two or three days to avoid infection and for the tissues to stabilize without suffering any injury. It is advisable to rest for the next 24 to 48 hours. The swelling will go down, and the stitches will fall out naturally. The return to work depends on each person, although it is usual to do so after the first week. Specialists advise not to have sexual relations before four or five weeks since the stitches could come loose or the scars could be damaged.
